Reading Time: 2 minutes

According to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, by the end of 2023 it is expected to have welcomed approximately 900,000 international students in the territory. For this reason, it has been decided to take measures to protect these students from possible educational scams and give them protection throughout their process, so starting December 1 of this year, all higher education institutions will be obliged to directly verify with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) the acceptance letter of each applicant before issuing a study permit.

This new verification process aims to protect prospective students from forged acceptance letters, along with the goal of improving educational quality in Canada for international students AND will ultimately ensure that study permits are issued only with based on genuine letters of acceptance.

Additionally, by fall 2024, IRCC will adopt a new “recognized institution” framework to benefit higher education institutions and set a higher standard for services, support and outcomes for international students. Some benefits of having this framework are, for example, the priority processing of study permits for applicants who plan to attend said school.
