Offshore versus Onshore Skilled Migration – Making the Right Move

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Australian Skilled Migration Program offers diverse pathways for individuals with valuable skills and expertise and immigration to Australia can be pursued both from onshore and offshore.

Onshore skilled migration refers to those who are already in Australia and wish to extend their stay or transit to permanent residency. This category includes individuals who may have studied in Australia, held temporary work visas, or worked in regional areas.

International students who wish to apply for the skilled visas in Australia must acquire specific qualifications within a minimum timeframe of two years. These qualifications can include a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctoral degree, or a trade qualification.

Upon successful completion of their studies, the students can apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485).

This visa is designed for international students who have completed at least 2 years of study in Australia, and it allows them to work in Australia temporarily after graduation. There are two streams under this visa category: the Graduate Work stream and the Post-Study Work stream. The Post-Study Work stream is particularly advantageous as it offers an extended stay in Australia ranging from two to four years, depending on the obtained highest qualification.

After acquiring relevant work experience as Temporary Graduate Visa holders, the individuals become eligible to pursue skilled visas as part of their migration goals.

The General Skilled Migration program includes visas such as the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190), and Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491). These visas require meeting specific eligibility criteria, including occupation skills assessments, English language proficiency, and meeting points requirements based on factors like age, education, work experience, and more.

Offshore skilled migration is designed for individuals who are located outside of Australia and wish to migrate based on their occupation which is in demand in Australia, their qualifications and work experience.

They have the advantage of being able to organize the entire immigration process in their home country and subsequently travel to Australia with a permanent residency visa. By organizing this process beforehand, they can ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to their new home in Australia.

Both onshore and offshore skilled visas serve as gateways for individuals to explore rewarding career opportunities and enjoy the unique Australian lifestyle.
